Trucking giant closes after 80 years of mail-delivery heritage

    Published:

An Indiana trucking company started way back in the 1940’s is closing after nearly 80 years hauling mail.

Creviston Trucking started hauling bulk mail in 1948 out of the Gary, Indiana Post Office, moving it from the mail building to trains and helicopters that would take it onto its next stop. Now, after a lot of growth and almost 80 years, the family-owned company is shutting down.

The company was most recently headed by Cindy Creviston, wife of the late Randy Creviston who started the business with his parents in 1948.

“Back in the 40s I can honestly say that with Randy – Randy Creviston was my husband – and his parents, they would literally take the mail from the Gary Post Office and they would bring it to the trains, they would bring it to the helicopters and then they would move it from there, so that was even before the trucks,” Cindy Creviston said in a phone interview with WBBM.

Before the end of 1948, the company purchased a dump truck as its first rig, which they started using to haul the bulk mail.

“The mail came in these canvas bags. They would just have a tag on it. This one goes to this train station, this one goes to the helicopter. That’s how it used to be done,” Cindy said.

Now, Cindy is ready to retire, and says the decision was hard to make, but feels good.

“Believe me, it was a very tough decision to even consider, but I decided it’s time to retire and so, yes, I made that decision and I’m very happy about it.”

Cindy says all the company’s truck drivers have been hired on by another trucking company taking over the former Creviston Trucking routes. More than 60 trucks and trailers owned by the company will be auctioned off online.
