A former trucking dispatcher with 13 years of experience has published a novel about the dark world of truckers.
“Freight,” by Ryan Lowell, was published on August 11, 2026, and features a cast of characters involved in an attempted cargo heist along the Canadian border.
“I’ve been working in the trucking industry for over a decade—not as a driver, but as a coordinator and operations manager—so I know the industry, the characters, and the dynamics very well,” Lowell said in an interview about the book with the Portland Press Herald.
“Plus, truckers are fantastic storytellers: they love to talk about the places they’ve been and the crazy things they’ve seen. I’d always written short stories, and a few years ago, I read an article about a truck-and-trailer theft that took place while the driver was having lunch at a rest stop, and I thought, ‘There’s a great idea for a novel right there.’”
The publisher’s website describes the book as follows: “As a lone truck plows through the snow toward the U.S.-Canada border, a cast of vivid characters finds itself inexorably drawn into a desperate, comical, and bloody scheme to steal its precious cargo.”
Lowell lives in South Portland, Maine, with his wife and two children.
