The Michigan Department of State (MDOS) has shut down a truck driver training school in Marquette due to alleged violations.
On August 5, the MDOS suspended operations at the Northern Michigan University Truck Driving School, located at 1401 Presque Isle Ave., in Marquette, “for multiple violations of the Driver Education and Instructor Training Act (DEPIA).”
The MDOS noted that an initial investigation into the school revealed violations that included:
- Conducting hands-on driving instruction with students without first verifying that they possessed valid commercial learner’s permits.
- Failure to maintain records required by law.
- Failing to maintain the required financial records for students.
- Failing to use the required written agreements with students prior to providing instruction.
- Storing records at a location other than the established official headquarters.
- Allowing students to sign blank training documents that were later filled out.
Pending the conclusion of the ongoing investigation, the Truck Driving School at Northern Michigan University may not conduct classes while the suspension is in effect.
