An NHL hockey team will have to deal with some disappointed fans in the stands after a shipment of bobbleheads was stolen in California while en route to Pittsburgh in a cargo theft incident.
On Thursday, March 14, the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins announced that some Jaromir Jagr bobbleheads had been stolen in California. As a result, the team says that fans hoping to get their hands on one of these dolls at tonight’s game in Pittsburgh against the San Jose Sharks will be left empty-handed.
“The Penguins realized they had been the victims of a cargo theft when the shipment did not arrive on the scheduled date. The team worked with the manufacturer and shipping companies to alert the relevant state and federal authorities, who are currently working to locate the merchandise. This is an ongoing investigation, and no further comments will be made so as not to hinder the recovery of the merchandise,” the team stated in a press release posted on social media.
The Penguins say they will provide fans with a voucher so they can pick up their bobblehead figurines at a later date, once the stolen items have been recovered or new figurines have been manufactured.
“We were very surprised to be the victims of a merchandise theft and are working closely with local and federal authorities on the investigation,” said Kevin Acklin, president of Commercial Operations for the Penguins. “Although this unfortunate incident adds to the legend of Jaromir Jagr—who will be a guest at tonight’s game—we hope to resolve this theft and return the prized Jagr figurines to their rightful owners, our fans,” Acklin added.
Later, the team shared a video in which Jagr himself pokes fun at the theft of the figurines.
