Virginia State Police (VSP) will participate this week in a traffic enforcement campaign focused on dangerous driving behaviors, such as speeding and distracted driving.
On August 20 and 21, 2026, the VSP will conduct “Operation DISS-RUPT” along the 299 miles of I-64.
During the traffic enforcement operation, officers will focus on distracted driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, compliance with speed limits, and seat belt use (DISS), with the goal of achieving zero fatal accidents during the 48-hour enforcement period.
“Although we are seeing a decline in traffic fatalities on Virginia’s roads, our mission to preserve life and protect the most vulnerable continues,” said Captain Brian Olha, commander of the Chesapeake Division of the Virginia State Police. “Virginians will see officers along I-64 next week promoting safety through a strategic presence.”
Ahead of the operation, the Virginia State Police (VSP) urged drivers to comply with the following to avoid tickets or warnings:
- Avoid distractions: Virginia has a “hands-free” law that prohibits drivers from holding personal communication devices while driving. Using GPS and making phone calls are legal, as long as the device is not in your hands.
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs: Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs is illegal in Virginia. Even driving while slightly intoxicated is considered driving under the influence. Always designate a sober driver, use public transportation, or use a ride-sharing service.
- Obey speed limits: The posted speed limits on Virginia’s interstate highways never exceed 70 mph. Therefore, your speed shouldn’t either.
The Virginia State Police (VSP) plans to continue Operation DISS-Rupt patrols on a rotating basis on Interstates 64, 95, 81, and 66.
