A truck driver and his passenger are in serious condition after veering off the road on Interstate 77 in Charleston on Wednesday morning.
The accident occurred on Wednesday, August 19, shortly before 6 a.m., at the Leon Sullivan exit off I-77 in downtown Charleston, West Virginia.
According to the Charleston Gazette-Mail, the tractor-trailer knocked down some power lines and sustained severe damage after falling from the elevated highway. The vehicle came to a stop in the 600 block of Summers Street, on property used by the West Virginia Department of Transportation. The truck driver and his passenger were seriously injured in the accident. Both were taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Approximately 250 buildings or homes lost power as a result of the accident, and a fuel spill occurred at the scene. The truck was carrying metal objects, which were scattered during the incident.
Eastbound traffic from I-64 is being diverted to I-79 North, and southbound traffic from I-77 is being diverted to I-64 West since approximately 7:00 a.m. Central Standard Time (CST).
