ODOT recently took to Facebook to remind drivers of one of the most basic traffic rules: you cannot stop on the highway.
The Ohio Department of Transportation posted a video on its Facebook page captured by a traffic camera showing an SUV stopping in the right-hand traffic lane, next to the exit ramp from Interstate 670 at Neil Avenue.
Next, a second car stops behind the first, followed by a white van. All three vehicles come to a near standstill in the travel lane. Next, a tanker truck approaches from behind and barely manages to swerve to the right into the exit lane, thus avoiding a serious pileup. The truck driver even manages to return to the regular travel lane without causing any incident and continues on his way.
“What if you hadn’t done this…?” reads the ODOT post. “We need you to stop randomly pulling over in the travel lane of an interstate highway and causing accidents.”
“If you’re confused, new to driving, or simply lost, DO NOT stop in a traffic lane. Instead, exit safely by following the flow of traffic or pull over safely,” the post continues.
“Sincerely, Ohio Department of Transportation.”
