The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has halted the inactivation of USDOT numbers related to biennial updates during the transition period to the new MOTUS registration system.
In a recent bulletin, FMCSA announced suspended enforcement for entities that have not completed the required biennial update.
FMCSA said that registrants whose biennial update was due on or after June 1, 2026, will have extra time and will not have their USDOT number deactivated in order to “help reduce disruptions during this transition period.”
The agency promised to provide additional guidance as “Motus recovery and stabilization efforts continue.”
Officials rolled out MOTUS in May of 2026 as a replacement for legacy registration systems that was intended to provide extra protection against chameleon carriers and other bad actors. Since then, many users have complained about glitches within the MOTUS system.
