Cabotage Violations: Canadian Trucker Accused by Border Patrol

    Published:

The U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) states that a Canadian trucker is facing legal proceedings after being caught transporting goods between two cities in New Mexico.

A Canadian trucker was detained by agents in Las Cruces, New Mexico, for “conducting unauthorized domestic freight operations,” according to a USBP statement published online on August 10, 2026.

The USBP accused the truck driver of violating cabotage laws, which prohibit foreign carriers and visa holders from transporting goods or passengers between two points within the United States.

“By violating the terms of his nonimmigrant visa—by transporting cargo from Deming to Los Lunas—the driver now faces legal proceedings and subsequent deportation,” the USBP stated.

The USBP has focused on violations of cabotage laws over the past year, and most enforcement actions have targeted Mexican truck drivers along the southern border.

“Enforcing cabotage laws is vital to protecting the U.S. economy and ensuring fair competition within the domestic transportation sector. By enforcing these laws, Border Patrol agents help preserve opportunities for U.S. truck drivers and trucking companies, ensuring that American workers remain competitive in the market,” the USBP previously stated.
