British Columbia transportation officials say that work has begun on building a new commercial vehicle inspection station along the Highway 97 corridor the previous facility was lost in a fire in late 2024.
On September 21, 2026, the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Transit announced that construction has started on a $9.2 million truck inspection facility along Highway 97 south of Prince George.
As part of the project, the weigh scale building will be replaced, and a new building will be constructed to provide more room for inspections. Officials say that the new facility will save truckers time spend waiting on inspections and improve the safe transportation of cargo along the Highway 97 corridor.
Construction is expected to be completed in December 2027.
“Keeping unsafe commercial vehicles off the road is critical to protecting people and families who use our highways every day and to support the smooth movement of goods throughout northern B.C.,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Transportation and Transit. “The newly rebuilt Red Rock Inspection Station will restore a critical facility, provide modern infrastructure for enforcement officers and support the province’s economy and supply chains.”
The former Red Rock Inspection Station was destroyed in by suspected arson on December 24, 2024. No one was in the building when the fire occurred. One firefighter suffered minor injuries while responding to the fire.
