Following a severe storm, Kentucky authorities have suspended certain regulations for commercial vehicle drivers transporting emergency relief supplies.
On August 12, 2026, the Kentucky Department of Transportation issued an exemption in response to the destructive storms that struck the northern part of the state on Tuesday, causing widespread debris and power outages.
The waiver declares a state of emergency and exempts commercial vehicles transporting certain goods from regulations regarding maximum driving time and stops at weigh stations.
The waiver applies to vehicles transporting cargo intended for:
- The provision of direct assistance in support of emergency relief efforts, including the transport of essential fuels, food, water, non-alcoholic beverages, medical supplies, and feed for livestock or poultry
- The transport of livestock, poultry, and crops ready for harvest
- Or, the restoration of public utilities and transportation services in response to the extreme weather event that occurred in Kentucky
Authorities noted that carriers operating under this exemption must comply with all other safety requirements and carry a copy of the order in the truck’s cab.
“A rapid response is critical during emergency situations,” said Transportation Secretary Rebecca Goodman. “This order will save valuable time and ensure that residents of Kentucky and neighboring states can receive the assistance they need as soon as possible.”
The exemption will remain in effect for 14 days, or until the state of emergency is lifted.
