The New York State Police (NYSP) conducted a major commercial vehicle enforcement operation along the New York State Thruway, during which nearly 1,000 violations were detected.
NYSP Troop T conducted a targeted operation along the New York State Thruway in late July as part of an initiative to reduce collisions involving commercial vehicles and bridges.
The following are the key results of the commercial vehicle enforcement operation on the New York State Thruway:
- 348 commercial vehicle inspections were conducted
- 126 vehicles were immediately taken off the road for safety-related violations
- 966 citations were issued for violations, including five for vehicles exceeding the maximum permitted height
- 189 traffic citations were issued for speeding, failure to wear a seat belt or use child restraint systems, cell phone use, issues with vehicle registration and driver’s licenses, and other violations

“Over the past five years, there have been more than 375 collisions with bridges on the Thruway network, and just this week, collisions with bridges on the Thruway caused by oversized commercial vehicles in upstate New York and western New York underscore the importance of drivers knowing the height of their vehicle and planning routes that avoid structures with height restrictions,” the NYSP stated.

NYSP Troop L conducted a similar operation to prevent collisions with bridges in the Long Island area in late July.
