Glycerin theft: Cloned documents used to reroute semi-trailer in Illinois

    Published:

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) recently recovered dozens of drums of “syrupy liquid” as part of a cargo theft investigation.

On September 17, 2026, CCSO received information about a shipment of 75 drums of stolen food-grade glycerin that had been taken and was suspected to be in Cook County, Illinois.

“Investigators learned that offender or offenders cloned the shipping documents to reroute the trailer to a different location,” police said.

Deputies were able to track the commercial vehicle to the 16800 block of Canal Street in Thornton, where it was stopped.

The glycerin was recovered and returned to the rightful owner.

CCSO said the shipment was valued at $60,000.

No suspects were arrested, and police are still investigating the cargo theft attempt.

Glycerin is used in food and pharmaceutical production.
