The California Highway Patrol (CHP) halted a pickup truck driver’s unsafe tow attempt and then arrested the driver, who was allegedly under the influence of drugs.
A CHP officer patrolling in the Santa Rosa area spotted a pickup with an “overloaded truck bed and a box trailer with its rear door open and debris hanging out,” according to a September 24 statement from the agency. “The improperly installed tow hitch was so low that it was dragging on the roadway and sparking.”

After pulling over the pickup truck and making contact with the driver, the officer observed signs of drug intoxication.
The pickup driver was “arrested and booked.”
CHP used the incident as a reminder to drivers about load securement and towing safety.
“Before you tow or haul, make sure your load is secured, your equipment is properly installed, and your vehicle is capable of safely handling the load. What might seem like a quick trip can create a serious hazard for you and everyone else on the road,” CHP said.
